Basham’s Party Pink Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia ‘Basham’s Party Pink’)

The Basham’s Party Pink Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia ‘Basham’s Party Pink’) is a large, hybrid crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica x fauriei) that grows to 20–30 feet tall with a similar spread, producing large clusters of lavender-pink flowers from summer to fall. It features smooth, exfoliating bark and dark green foliage that turns yellow, orange, or red in the fall. The plant is fast-growing, drought-tolerant once established, and disease-resistant, thriving in full sun and well-drained, slightly acidic soil.

  • Size: A large tree, typically growing 20–30 feet tall with a spread of 20–30 feet. It can have a low canopy of about 5 feet, making it suitable for planting under power lines with training.
  • Flowers: Produces large clusters of soft, lavender-pink blooms from summer to early fall.
  • Foliage: Dark green leaves that turn shades of orange-red to yellow in the fall.
  • Bark: Smooth, fluted bark that exfoliates to reveal a pattern of tans, grays, and silver-gray, with reddish-brown undertones.
  • Sunlight: Requires full sun for the best flowering and overall health.
  • Soil: Prefers rich, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It is tolerant of various soil types but can develop yellowing foliage (chlorosis) in alkaline soils.
  • Water: Drought-tolerant once established but benefits from deep watering during dry spells.
  • Pest and disease resistance: Generally resistant to powdery mildew and deer. Older varieties are more prone to issues like sooty mold caused by aphids, so managing pests is crucial.
  • Pruning: Can be pruned in late winter to manage height and shape. Over-pruning can lead to an odd appearance.
  • Fertilizing: Can be fertilized in late winter or early spring with a slow-release outdoor fertilizer.
