‘Sierra’ Mexican Red Oak (Quercus Canbyi)

‘Sierra’ Mexican Red Oak (Quercus Canbyi)

The Sierra Red Oak or Mexican Red Oak (Quercus Canbyi) is a semi- evergreen oak tree from Mexico with striking, narrow, jaggedly toothed, red new foliage in spring and colorful foliage in fall. Growing to a height of 25–50 ft, it is a semi-deciduous tree adapted to full sun, rocky, alkaline, and well-drained soils, and thrives in USDA Hardiness Zones 7b–10. This tree is highly drought-tolerant, provides food and cover for wildlife, and is considered a valuable ornamental and shade tree for Central and South Texas.

  • Leaves: Young leaves are a distinctive, red tint with jagged or serrated edges, fading to green as they mature
  • Habit: It is a semi-evergreen or nearly evergreen tree with a unique, striking shape
  • Height: The tree can reach 25 to 50 feet tall
  • Fruit: It produces acorns that are a food source for wildlife
  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun to part shade
  • Late-season color: It displays winter foliar coloration, which can be quite spectacular, especially in warmer climates. This occurs later than the typical fall color change of deciduous trees, often around Christmas to Valentine’s Day.
  • Green in warmer winters: In warmer climates (USDA Zone 8 and above), it is described as “late deciduous,” meaning it will often hold onto its leaves well into the winter before eventually dropping them
  • New growth is red/burgundy: In spring, its new leaves emerge in a vibrant display of red before maturing to a dark green color for the summer
  • Climate-dependent variation: Its leaf color can vary depending on the weather conditions, with the most vibrant winter colors appearing after cool, but not freezing, temperatures
