This evergreen tree is one of the most popular trees in Texas. It adapts to a wide variety of soils and is found thriving all over the state, with many specimens living for Centuries. They grow 30-50 feet tall, depending on soil and tree genetics and can get as wide. Most references say this is a slow to medium growth rate tree, not so slow at my Tree Farm. They are one of the fastest growing trees that I handle. Live Oaks are susceptible to Oak Wilt so always follow recommended guidelines when planting or pruning. Live oaks were once prized for their naturally curved limbs and trunk, that were used by shipbuilders in the 18th Century to fashion the ribs and planking of tall sailing ships. When they refit “Old Ironsides” in the1980’s, specialty pieces cut from live oaks in Texas that had been killed by the oak wilt fungus were used.
